Designing My Own Education : Becoming a Creative Architect

Leveraging my own unique interests and skills to create my own education, and projecting my own future.

It was my Sophmore year of college. The old romanticized dreams of a college where any education was of maximum value. This idea was a distant memory.

The traditional education system does not support unique thought processes. Unless it is can reap its benefits. I began to realize following traditional paths would only take me to a place I did not want to be. I have various unique interests, to sum up, what I do simply as "design" or "business" would be a misinterpretation.

To better understand where I am coming from here projects or things I've done :

  • Written and Directed Short Films and commercials
  • Designed and Directed Photoshoots
  • Produced a fashion show
  • Designed clothing
  • Designed Apps and Websites
  • Given lectures talks and preacher sermons

and others things that would make the list to long.

But for me to follow a tracked path, would be to give up uniqueness and creativity.

Building my own education is not a dismissal of traditional education. But leveraging the strengths of traditional education and new educational methods, to create my own unique system. Something that represents the whole of my skill sets. Not just a degree in "design." But thinking long term to build up a skill-set that is anti-fragile. Becoming knowledgeable in fundamental things that will withstand the test of time.

The Proto Creative-Architects

I looked at my inspirations to know what I can learn from them. I wanted to know what were the unique corners that they held. The thing that made them great. Not necessarily skill sets, but in the broader sense what gave them the edge? The edge that made them untouchable from the competition. I wanted to know the unique things that they studied, that don't traditionally connect with what they are doing. But the thinking they learned from it is what gives them the edge.

Below are the Archetypes I am building my education around. Under each is a one-liner of what can be learned from their work :

Creative Architecture

My goal when designing my education is to become a Creative Architect. In my definition, a Creative Architect is someone with an understanding of all aspects of the consumer interacting sides of a business(Design, Storytelling, Marketing,etc.). My ideal vision for this title is someone who can operate in many spaces but sticks to their core values. One who can lead a UX Design team, then go on and direct a commercial. Someone who can run the next big fashion brand then, go be apart of the branding and marketing team at a tech company. The creative who understands the architecture behind creating meaningful consumer experiences.

Designing my Education

From each archetype, I pull inspirations on what to study. I will be focusing my studies and research over the next few months on four key areas. Design and Branding, Philosophy and Theory, Storytelling, and Technology. Here are the specific books and courses I plan to use to enable my learning.
